On Writing in Public Without Performing
Publishing is not the same as performing. A note on tone, usefulness, and knowing when to stay quiet.
The internet rewards performance. Certainty sells. Nuance is slow. It is easy to confuse publishing with putting on a show — stronger takes, sharper edges, a persona that never admits doubt.
I try to write differently here. Not softer in the sense of vague — softer in the sense of accurate. If I do not know, I say so. If a notice is important, I keep the headline clear and the next steps practical. If an essay is reflective, I do not dress it up as a manifesto.
Writing in public is useful when it helps someone think, act, or feel less alone. It becomes noise when it exists mainly to prove the writer is interesting.
That distinction is why this site keeps PSAs separate from the Journal. Essays can wander a little. Public notices should not. One is for reflection. The other is for clarity when clarity matters.
